architectural photography Vancouver

Even if you don't rent a crane or have a tilt
shift lens for architecture, you can make that
tower stand up straight just by standing back
and shooting it with a long lens.

Jazz Festival Vancouver

Festivals are great for people photos.
Put on that long lens and start looking around.
This one is from Robson Square, Vancouver
during a concert as part of the Jazz Festival.
Everyone else wants to shoot the band.
I think the faces and interactions in the crowd
are more interesting. These and other images
are marketed by CP Images.

chance photography

If you're not carrying the camera, you may miss some
good photo ops. I like cruising around the city on my
bike and just getting lucky. Of course, you have to be
ready for the luck.  "Chance favours the prepared
photographer," said Ansel. Or something like that.

photographing glass

Reflective subjects need soft light. You could try a
cloudy day light but there still may be too many
reflections.  Get some powerful lights and some
diffusion material like white nylon sheets to build a little
tent around the glass or metal or whatever the
subject is. The light will be soft enough that there
are no reflections.

flowers in VanDusen Garden

Spring is a great time in VanDusen Garden
in Vancouver. Shooting with a macro lens
is the way to get close and put that background
 out of focus.
