night photography in my July photo course

I'm offering a travel photography course
at False Creek Community Centre, three
evenings, July 5, 6, 7. We'll go to the
convention centre and shoot at twilight.
And do some long exposures with other
subjects. And use flash with long exposures.

I teach basic photography at the
False Creek Community Centre
on Granville Island. New classes
almost every month. In the first
week of July I have a three evening
travel photography class. In the fall
I'll also have classes at the West Point
Grey community centre.

I also give people one to one lessons.

If we had more time than the nine
hours of my course, I'd get students
to learn composition by shooting
black and white. I think it helps to
see line, texture, shape, form, pattern
and the other elements of composition.
Colour is great but it's so powerful, it
overwhelms a photo and a good photo
needs those other elements.
Learning to see is what photography is
all about. It takes a lot of practice
after the short course is over.

I shoot publicity photos for United Players
and headshots for actors and executives.
I always shoot way more than I think I
need. Just turning the model a bit
or coming in closer or the way she smiles
can make the shot. Just keep the model
moving and changing the angle a bit
and tell her what you need. Shoot lots.
